There is no doubt that yoga has become a main-stream practice throughout America, with over 17 million
people practicing regularly. Yoga makes people feel better, stronger, and healthier. Yoga Day USA offers
those who haven't tried it, the opportunity to experience first-hand how yoga can enrich their lives. Free
workshops are being offered nationwide as part of the Ninth Annual Celebration.
Locally, several free workshops highlighting different yoga styles will be held at the YMCA from
12:00PM to 3:00PM. Each yoga session will be lead by a different yoga instructor and will last one
hour. Information on participating local yoga studios, the instructors, and yoga in general will be
provided at the workshops. A map to the location can by found by clicking on the "Maps" button
to the left of this page.
The workshops are open to all ages and fitness levels. Everyone can benefit from yoga. Athletes, from
weekend warriors to professionals (golfers, cyclists, ballerinas, football players, etc.), have found that yoga
complements their regular workout regimen, helps them to better focus during competition, and recover
quicker from daily training stress and game injuries. Children enjoy the benefits of body awareness,
self-health, and inner focus that guide them throughout their entire life. And don't think that just because
you are retired you are too old or out of shape for yoga. One of the most influential people of our time in
bringing yoga to our community and much of South Texas was Ruth Lain, who sought out yoga for the
first time at 65 yrs. old and eventually wrote the book "Yoga With Ya'll: South Texas Style".
"People begin to practice yoga for many reasons," said Yoga Alliance President and CEO Stephen Russell.
"It might be stress or pain relief, improved fitness or weight management. Regardless of why they begin,
most say yoga has provided them with a heightened sense of well being that has made it essential in their
lives."
Yoga challenges the body and calms the mind while providing a sense of relaxation and rejuvenation. There
is a style of yoga to suit everyone regardless of age, body type or fitness level. Yoga Day USA offers a
great introduction to the benefits of Yoga for Life!
